Edditon to Thursday's blog! (9-5-14)

  •   Agora- the Agora was a central spot in ancient Greece city-states. The literal meaning of the word is “Gathering” or “Assembly.” The agora was the center of the athletic, artistic, spiritual, and political life of the city. It was meant to be the ideal place to gather.
·       Arete in basic sense, means “Excellence of any kind.” The term may also mean “moral virtue.” In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s full potential.


·       Polis is a city-state in ancient Greece, especially as considered in its ideal form for philosophical purposes. It also included the surrounding areas. It was a unified government to.


·       508 BC was a year of the pre- Julian calendar. In the Roman Empire it was known as the Year of the Consulship of Poplicola and Tricipitinus. That was the first place where there was democracy.


·       Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher credited as one of the founders of western philosophy. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle were big philosophers. A lot of philosophers base their writings on Socrates view on life. 
         
  • The Death of Socrates is a 1787 oil canvas by the French painter Jacques- Louis David. He was put on trial for "poisoning" the youth and disrespecting the gods. He went before 500+ jurors. He was found guilty of the charges. He had several points where you could have gotten away, but he choose not to. He died from drinking hemlock which is a terrible way to die.


·       The Socratic Method, named after the Greek philosopher Socrates, is a form of inquiry and discussion between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to illuminate ideas.
