In today’s
class we watched a video about how rapidly the earth is changing. One thing I
learned is that soon China will soon become the number one English speaking
country in the world. Another thing I learned is that the 25% of India’s
population with the highest IQ is greater than the US population. Something
else I learned is that the top 10 in- demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in
2004. They are training the students for jobs that don’t even exist yet. The
U.S. Department of Labor estimates that today’s students will have 10-14 jobs
before the age 38. 1 out of 8 couples that were married in the U.S. last year
met online. There are 845 million monthly active users on Facebook. Facebook is
available in more than 70 languages. If Facebook was a country, it would be the
third largest (behind China & India) Twitter is seeing 50 million tweets
per day. That would mean there are 600 tweets per second. There are 31 billion
google searchers per month. In 2006, the number was 2.6 million. The first
commercial text message was sent in 1992. Today the number of text messages
sent and received exceed the population of the planet. For radio, it took 38
years to reach an audience of 50 million. For the internet, it took 4 years to
reach an audience of 50 million. For the iPod, it took 3 years to reach an
audience of 50 million. I took 2 years for Facebook to reach an audience of 50
million. The number of internet devices in 1984 was 1,000. The number of
internet devices in 2008 1,000,000,000. The amount of new technical information
is doubling every two years. For students starting a 4 year technical degree
that means half of what they learn in their first year of study will be out
dated by their third year of study. Digital music sales in 2011 outstripped
physical sales for the first time ever. During the video there was a total of
694,000 songs downloaded illegally.
