9-11-14 Class

In today’s class re- watched the “Did you know” video. One thing I learned is that if you are one in a million in China then there are 1,300 people just like you. I also learned that India has more honors kids then America has kids. They are training today’s students to use technology that have not been invented yet. They do this so that we can solve problems that we don’t even know are problems yet. 1 in 4 workers has been with their current employer for less than a year. 1 in 2 workers have been there less than 5 years. We are living in exponential times. For the TV to reach a target audience of 50 million it took 13 years. The number of internet devices in 1992 was 1,000,000. There are 540,000 words in the English language. That is 5X as many as during Shakespeare’s time. It is estimated that a week’s worth of the New York Times contains more information than a person was likely to come across in the 18th Century. It is estimated that 4 exabytes of unique information will be generated this year. That is more than the previous 5,000 years. NTT Japan has successfully tested a fiber optic cable that pushes 14 trillion bits per second down a single strand of fiber. Revenue from the iPhone and iPad now account for 72% of Apple’s total revenue. Neither item could be bought five years ago. By 2013, a super computer will be built that exceeds a computational capabilities of the human brain. Predictions are that by 2049, a $1,000 computer will exceed the computational capabilities of the entire human species. During the video 67 babies were born in the U.S., 274 babies born in China, and 395 babies were born in India.
