9-29-14 Class

Today in Human Geo we had a substitute. Our substitute today was Mrs. Amato. We watched a video on Population Pyramids. One thing I learned is that Russia and Nigeria has the same population. But not for long because one population is rapidly growing while the other is slowly declining. Another thing I learned about is that Population statistics is important information to Social scientists has to work with. Complex data is easier to comprehend by visualization. A way they make the information easier to read is a population pyramid. The pyramid is separated by gender and is divided into every five year intervals. The pyramid starts at 0-4 and ends at 100 and up. The pyramid is divided into pre- reproductive years which is the ages 0-14, reproductive ages 15-44, and post reproductive ages 45- 100+. Another thing we did in your class today is take a quiz that is on your blog. The answers are below.

1)     A

2)     D

3)     C

4)     A

Today in Human Geo we did a few things. One thing that happened was that Mr. Schick was not going to be there on Monday because he was going to a wedding. So during class Mr. Schick checked in for his flight tomorrow morning. He was number B13. After that, People came up and shared interesting facts about a country of their choice. I decided to share some facts about Vatican City. One thing I learned is that the population of Vatican City is 842. The total area is 0.44 sq. kilometers. Another thing I learned is that the total water area is 0 sq. kilometers. After I went up other people went up and shared about other countries. Another one was Monaco. I also shared the drinking water source for the US. It is pretty good improvement stats for the US. The total is 99.2%. I thought it was really interesting to hear about statistics of other countries.

9-25-14 Class

Today in Human Geo Mr. Shick gave back the tests to the people who was absent yesterday. Also today, we had a shadow in our class whose name was Ryan. After that we continued taking notes. One thing we talked about was TFR which stands for Total Fertility Rate. TFR is also referred to as the replacement rate. The TFR for the US is 2.06. For a population to remain the same, the TFR must be 2.1. If the TFR is higher than 2.1, than the population rises. If it is lower than 2.1, than the population lowers. Even though the US’s TFR rate is lower than 2.1, the population is not lowering because of the number of people immigrating into the US. We also talked about pull forces and push forces. We came up with some of our own push and pull forces. We talked about the immigration rate also. The immigration rate is 3.62.

Today in Human Geo we got our test back and reviewed them. When we came into class he told us that we were getting our tests back. He said that if after our name was called we heard one ding then we got an A. If we heard two Dings than that means we got a 100%. No one got a 100 in our class. When I heard my name called, I heard one ding. I went up got my test and saw I got a 91% on my test. I was happy with my grade. After everyone got their test back than we started reviewing the test. When I got a question wrong, I corrected it. On the essay, when I got points off for that question I added details on that question. I also added some details on some of the questions that I got full credit for. I had two essay questions where I lost no points. By the time we finished reviewing the test class was over.

Today in Human Geo we talked about several of things. Also, we reviewed from last week. We just reviewed the average age of people in the US. One thing we talked about is why people want to immigrant. There are push forces and pull forces. A push force is a thing that drives someone out of a country. A pull force is a thing that makes the person want to go to that country. Some examples of push forces are Civil War, Environment degradation, unemployment or under employment, or religious or ethnic persecution. Religious persecution push force was big in WWII. Some examples of pull forces are better economic opportunity, better health services, religious freedom, and political freedom. Another thing we talked about today in class is TFR which is the average number of children born per woman. For a population to remain the same, the TFR must be 2.1. Higher than 2.1, the population goes up. Lower than 2.1, the population goes down. The world TFR is 2.47 which was 2.54 two years ago. In the US, the TFR is 2.06. In Nigeria, the TFR is 5.38. In Japan, the TFR is 1.39.

Today in Human Geo we continued on the new unit and went on the CIA Fact book. The life expectancy in the U.S went up for male from 76.05 to 77.11. The birth rate is 13.42 births per 1,000. The death rate in U.S. 8.15 deaths per 1,000. The Population of the U.S. is 318,892,103 and we are ranked 4th in the world. The population of the Vatican City is 842 with is ranked 238th in the World out of 240 countries. The population growth in Vatican City is 0%. The area is 0.44 sq. km. They are ranked 252nd in the world for area. The total water area is 0.00 sq. km. Another Country I looked at was Spain. The population of Spain is 47,737,941. For population, the rank 29th in the World. Spain’s birth rate is 9.88 births per 1,000 population. Spain’s death rate is 9 deaths per 1,000 population. Their population growth rate is 0.81%. For population growth rate, they rank 135th in the world. Spain’s life expectancy for males is 78.47. Spain’s life expectancy for females is 84.67. For life expectancy, they rank 18th in the world.

Today in Human Geo we started the new unit. The unit was on Population and Migration. We talked about the population of the world. Another thing we talked about was the different kinds of countries. The population of the world is over 7 billion people. The population increases rapidly. In one year, the increase in population is 73 million people. 90% of the population growth comes from the developing countries. The first kind of country is a developed country. A developed country is a country who can provide aid for their citezens. Not only can they provide but they also feed them and provide water. An example is that in America which is a developed country has paved roads and traffic signals. Also, they provide education to their citezens. The thing that mainly defines a developed country is that they have access to technology. The other type of country is a developing country. The definition is a country that does not have access to technology. Also, does not provide much education. We also talked about life expectancy today in class. The definition of that is the average number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year.

9-17-14 Blog

Today in Human Geo we took the quiz on, Americanization/ Globalization, A Message to Garcia, Did you know video, and ancient Greece. We came into class. Next, he reviewed the instructions and gave us the test. One of the questions on the test was “When was A Message to Garcia written?” Another question on the test was, “Who wrote A Message to Garcia?” Also, one of the questions were, “Who wanted A Message to Garcia to be delivered?” Another one was, “Who delivered A Message to Garcia.” The test was for the most part essay, but there were a few questions that were hard. The hardest question on the test was, “How many people actually voted in 2012?” The test took me almost the whole class period. When I was done there was like 10 minutes left of class. I think I got a 100% on the test. If I did not get a 100%, I think I got close to it than.

9-15-14 Blog

Today in class we reviewed for our quiz. At first, he took roll and got started with class. He reminded us about our quiz on Wednesday. Next, he told us what topics were going to be on the quiz. After that, he started to tell us some of the questions on the quiz. The quiz is on a message to Garcia, ancient Greece, Did you know 3.0, and Americanization/ globalization. One of the questions is who delivered the “Message to Garcia.” Another question was who wrote, “The Message to Garcia.” He gave us a couple more questions. He told us what kind of questions would be on the test. He told us there would be multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer. Also, he said there would not be true and false because he says that is the worst way to test someone on their knowledge. He also told of some ways to study for the quiz. That is what we did in class today.

9-12-14 Class

In today’s class we talked about several topics. The first thing we talked about was Globalization. Globalization is the connection to the other parts of the world. It results from the expansion of international culture, economic, and political activities. Globalization is not a phenomenon that has just been invented. It has been around for quite a while. The other thing we talked about today in class is about Americanization. Americanization of other countries are also driven by cultural items. In North Korea, there is no American things in their country. Japan did not have American fast food restaurants, but than a few years later they started to be built in Japan. Before Japan added the fast food restaurants, the life span for people in Japan was longer than after they added the fast food restaurants. In China, they have restaurants like Mc Donalds and KFC, but the building is designed like China’s architecture. There are many countries in the world that have the American fast food restaurant.

9-11-14 Class

In today’s class re- watched the “Did you know” video. One thing I learned is that if you are one in a million in China then there are 1,300 people just like you. I also learned that India has more honors kids then America has kids. They are training today’s students to use technology that have not been invented yet. They do this so that we can solve problems that we don’t even know are problems yet. 1 in 4 workers has been with their current employer for less than a year. 1 in 2 workers have been there less than 5 years. We are living in exponential times. For the TV to reach a target audience of 50 million it took 13 years. The number of internet devices in 1992 was 1,000,000. There are 540,000 words in the English language. That is 5X as many as during Shakespeare’s time. It is estimated that a week’s worth of the New York Times contains more information than a person was likely to come across in the 18th Century. It is estimated that 4 exabytes of unique information will be generated this year. That is more than the previous 5,000 years. NTT Japan has successfully tested a fiber optic cable that pushes 14 trillion bits per second down a single strand of fiber. Revenue from the iPhone and iPad now account for 72% of Apple’s total revenue. Neither item could be bought five years ago. By 2013, a super computer will be built that exceeds a computational capabilities of the human brain. Predictions are that by 2049, a $1,000 computer will exceed the computational capabilities of the entire human species. During the video 67 babies were born in the U.S., 274 babies born in China, and 395 babies were born in India.

9-10-14 Class

In today’s class we watched a video about how rapidly the earth is changing. One thing I learned is that soon China will soon become the number one English speaking country in the world. Another thing I learned is that the 25% of India’s population with the highest IQ is greater than the US population. Something else I learned is that the top 10 in- demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004. They are training the students for jobs that don’t even exist yet. The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that today’s students will have 10-14 jobs before the age 38. 1 out of 8 couples that were married in the U.S. last year met online. There are 845 million monthly active users on Facebook. Facebook is available in more than 70 languages. If Facebook was a country, it would be the third largest (behind China & India) Twitter is seeing 50 million tweets per day. That would mean there are 600 tweets per second. There are 31 billion google searchers per month. In 2006, the number was 2.6 million. The first commercial text message was sent in 1992. Today the number of text messages sent and received exceed the population of the planet. For radio, it took 38 years to reach an audience of 50 million. For the internet, it took 4 years to reach an audience of 50 million. For the iPod, it took 3 years to reach an audience of 50 million. I took 2 years for Facebook to reach an audience of 50 million. The number of internet devices in 1984 was 1,000. The number of internet devices in 2008 1,000,000,000. The amount of new technical information is doubling every two years. For students starting a 4 year technical degree that means half of what they learn in their first year of study will be out dated by their third year of study. Digital music sales in 2011 outstripped physical sales for the first time ever. During the video there was a total of 694,000 songs downloaded illegally.

9-8-14 Class

Today’s Human Geo class was interesting. Today in class Mr. Schick gave us assigned seats, but Reece challenged it. Mr. Schick decided to let us run a meeting as they would in Greece. What we did is where whoever wanted to share came up to a podium and give their speech. So, Nate started us out by giving an excellent speech. Some people said they liked the assigned seats and some people wanted to sit where they wanted. Mr. Schick said he liked the assigned seats because he wanted to learn our names and that it would be easier by having a seating chart. I then said that he could let us choose where to sit then make a seating chart of where we chose to sit. So, after we gave our speeches the class took a vote and the majority was to change seats. After we did that Mr. Schick made the seating chart. After all that got complete we talked about what we just did. Today’s class was entertaining but also got to do what the Greeks did back in the days.

Edditon to Thursday's blog! (9-5-14)

  •   Agora- the Agora was a central spot in ancient Greece city-states. The literal meaning of the word is “Gathering” or “Assembly.” The agora was the center of the athletic, artistic, spiritual, and political life of the city. It was meant to be the ideal place to gather.

Today's Class (9-3-14)

Today in human geo we did a lot of things. The first thing we did is help people with their blogs. After we did that we talked about the message to Garcia and took notes. The person who wrote the message was Elbert Hubbara. It was written and published in 1899. The person who was to deliver the message was Rowen. The Spanish American war was going on at the time. The message to Garcia was a metaphor. Rowen was successful at delivering the message to Garcia. I took him three weeks to find Rowen and give him the message. Garcia was in Cuba fighting for America, but he was needing assistance. President Mc Kinley was who sent the message another thing we did in class is watch Mr. Schick’s video of him doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. He dumped a bucket of ice water over his head and donated money to ALS research because he knew two people who had the disease and it was a hard time.
